Online multiplayer was smooth and speedy. To its credit, I found this game a refreshing change from the standard FPS that puts you on rails and forces you to walk a single path between objectives. There were also few minor bugs in single-player mode that might represent a rush to hit PS4 launch. Overall, Killzone: Shadow Fall is a visually stunning game that shows off the PS4's power yet falls short of being engaging and fun to play. Sets The Standard for PS4 Launch Titles AND Leaves Room for Improvement This enhances the feeling of community offered by online multiplayer. Users can create their own Warzone maps that can then be shared with and rated by other players. One minute you're trying to capture strategic points on the map, the next minute you're defending these locations from being sabotaged by the enemy, and the minute after that you're attempting to sabotage enemy locations. Warzone mode keeps players are kept on their toes by forcing them to achieve five rolling objectives in a random order.

Shadow Fall's multiplayer mode is well thought out and fun to play, although it falls short of Battlefield 4's thrilling multiplayer mode. Seems a bit out of place in a science-fiction FPS.

While I'm being critical, I also found it intriguing that my weaponry included some sort of magical knife that could be thrown at enemies, lodge in their chests, and then instantly reappear in my hand. Don't worry, I figured out how to put him out of his misery with a well-placed head shot. Once I was face to face with a Helghast who was stuck in a loop of stepping up onto a rock and then falling off of it repeatedly. It's worth mastering, however, as the OWL will ultimately become an indispensable ally.įor the most part enemy AI is very good, but there were more than a few instances where enemies simply seemed not to know where they were. The OWL is both cool and helpful, but you get it immediately preceding a fire fight, so you get to figure out how to use it while you get gunned down over and over again. The OWL can serve as a shield, attack enemies, cover you, hack alarms and consoles, and provide a zipline to help you maneuver through multilevel environments. You control the OWL using the PS4's touchpad, sweeping your finger in different directions to issue commands. One interesting mechanic is the OWL, a remote-control drone assistant that travels with you through the game. I found this approach to the FPS refreshing, as I've grown tired of the typical straightforward path found in most games of the genre.

In stark contrast to Call of Duty: Ghosts ($14.47 at Amazon) (Opens in a new window), many of the levels take place in big, open environments where I had to figure out where to go and what to do. How and where you take cover now matters, and more open levels means that you won't simply march from objective to objective you can complete objectives in the order that makes the most sense to you. There's a nice balance between stealth and charging forward and killing everyone in sight. Nearly every Helghast you encounter is gruff, surly, and itching for revenge. This intergalactic special ops team runs classified operations across the wall in Helghan territory. You play as Lucas Kellan, an orphan (yes, you get to watch your father get gunned down mercilessly by Helghast troops), who is taken in by the Vektan Shadow Marshals. On the surface the world appears harsh but peaceful, but digging deeper it's easy to see that the situation is a powder keg about to go off. The two factions have formed an uneasy truce and remain separated by an enormous wall. Set roughly 30 years after the end of Killzone 3, Killzone: Shadow Fall focuses on the aftermath of the Petrusite attack on Helghan and the resulting survivor evacuation to Vekta. Unfortunately, the storyline is as weak, much like previous Killzone titles.
